Apple's AirPods, launched more than a year ago, continue to enjoy significant popularity, marking another triumph for the tech giant. Despite their sleek design and a single size option, these wireless earphones can occasionally cause an embarrassing moment for users with larger ears, slipping out during use.
According to a 9to5mac survey early this year, 65% of AirPods owners reported that their earphones had never fallen out, while 35% shared instances where they had accidentally dropped them. Among those, 7.06% noted that their AirPods frequently fell out even during casual strolls.
The global community of "AirPods Drop Squad" has devised various solutions to address this issue, from custom ear tips to "drop-proof" cords, aiming to ensure that the smooth surface doesn't lead to a loss.
Recently, a user on the Macrumors forum, identified as "NewZealandMatt," proposed a straightforward yet stylish solution for AirPods users. Matt faced difficulties with his left earbud falling out due to the shape of his ear canal. After trying special sponges and silicone covers without success, he stumbled upon a simple fix: adhesive tape.
The only tools required were a hole puncher and a roll of waterproof 3M tape, chosen for its affordability and water resistance. By punching small circles at the top and bottom of each earbud and attaching the tape, Matt managed to prevent the AirPods from slipping out.
This method involves two steps: first, making holes with a hole puncher, then applying the tape around the earbuds. The waterproof tape is placed internally, ensuring it remains hidden when worn, offering a more aesthetically pleasing alternative to silicone tips.
Matt confirmed that this approach effectively stopped his AirPods from falling out, as the tape adheres to the inner surface without being visible when in use. This solution not only keeps the AirPods secure but also adds a touch of creativity, demonstrating the ingenuity of the community in addressing common issues.
Have your AirPods ever slipped out? If you've experienced discomfort or poor fit, consider giving this method a try.
